What I’ve Learned From Only Using Black And White Photos…

When I restarted my Instagram account my goal was to do something that stood out. I liked most of the black and white pictures that I had previously posted so I decided to stick with the black and white theme. Recently I asked for help and opinions on if I should keep the black and white photos going👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻, most people said yes to keep it…so I have.

Buuut to be honest it’s tough to post aesthetically pleasing photos that are only in black and white all the time. There’s just something about a colorful photo that can really catch the eye and attention of Instagrammers quickly scrolling through. All that being said there are some positives as well. So, here is my list of the good, the bad and the ugly of a feed with zero color.

The Good:

You can make most photos look really cool when they’re in black and white. For some reason it’s just easier, that’s why we have the filter for it I suppose. It makes my feed look super cohesive. It really is one of the easiest ways to make each photo look like it belongs…it’s simple, just make it black and white. Overall I think it looks cool and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments saying they like the black and white filter look (thanks for the compliments btw ☺️).

The Bad:

With all the photos not having any color your background has to have a lot of variation and contrast. I mean, I can’t take a picture in front of a wall or something because everything would look to plain. There has to be some disparity to make it visually interesting. Which is exactly what Catherine here 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 said when I asked for opinions on adding color and in a lot of ways I tend to agree with her. For example, I go on vacation to the beach and take a picture of the gorgeous sunset! In black and white it looks like a normal picture of the sun, but with color it’s the most beautiful photo you’ve ever seen. For a non-color picture to work I’d have to add a palm tree, the ocean, maybe a beach chair and a cold Coca Cola all so it can be visually appealing. Color adds the variety.

Another example, the featured image for this post☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻…we were trying to take a picture of a waterfall that had frozen and looked really cool. The picture didn’t turn out, so instead of an awesome, very interesting, photo…you just see Kate and I looking like we got bundled up in our front living room and snapped a selfie…😳

I will say this, while it is a hard thing and does limit some of my options on photos…it does force me to get creative. I have to think outside the box and really plan out good photos that are different and fun.

The Ugly:

The ugly may not actually be an ugly. The problem that I see for the future is when I want to promote something, or give a shout out or do anything that I might want to “stick out” a little more…color always helps with that. Who knows though, that might be what sets me apart at the end of the day, but for now I could see it making life a little difficult.

Conclusion:

Overall I’ve been happy with my Insta-Feed. There are some difficulties with a strict theme, but the account has continued to grow so I’ll stick with it until there needs to be a change.
